Introduction

The purpose of this blog is to discuss in depth Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow for my AP Language and Composition class. In our unit on race, I most wanted to discuss and learn about the criminal justice side of race as it relates to our country, since I had already watched a documentary discussing the topic (called 13th for those who are equally as interested in this topic). The New Jim Crow discusses similar issues, focusing mainly on mass incarceration in America and its roots in the history of slavery and Jim Crow laws. With each entry, I will be discussing a new chunk of the book (approximately 50 pages or so), and analyzing the arguments made by Alexander, as well as the rhetoric used in the process and my overall thoughts. Thanks for reading!

  1. Nice introduction to the blog! I am reading the same book, and I am interested in comparing my thoughts and insights on The New Jim Crow to yours as we keep reading. I liked your connection to the documentary you watched and how you referenced it in case any of your readers were interested in viewing it as well.
